NEW YORK (Xinhua) — U.S. stocks held gains on Tuesday as investors were awaiting a key meeting from the Federal Reserve.
All focus will be on the two-day Fed meeting, starting later on Tuesday. Investors were hoping the central bank can come up with some stimulus plan to help the fragile recovery. Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services slashed Italy’s sovereign- debt rating late Monday by one notch and kept its outlook negative, citing the weak economic growth and fragile government coalition in the eurozone’s third biggest economy.
However, a much better-than-expected bond auction in Greece overshadowed the bad news. Investors also felt somewhat relieved as discussions to provide additional bailout funds for Greece were set to resume on Tuesday, a positive step to the right direction.
The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 113.04 points, or 0.99 percent, to 11,514.05. The Standard & Poor’s 500 gained 12.04 points, or 1.00 percent, to 1,216.13. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 22.54 points, or 0.86 percent, to 2,635.37.
