Money- Less Important…

According to research, money is less important to employees than the feeling of being appreciated and recognized by superiors.

When the basic needs of employees are already met, money can no longer buy something people want, that is, the feeling of being needed by other people.  An employee surely feels better when the praise comes from the boss for satisfactory performance.

The following are some tips for those who are in charge of managing people:

  • Show even a little appreciation.  It can make even the worst of jobs worth doing.  A sincere showing of appreciation from a superior can be a big help for an employee make even the tedious, messiest task seem worth the effort.
  • Superiors should never forget that aside from giving out the employee’s pay check, workers also need to feel being appreciated on a regular basis.
  • The employee who is praised once will put more effort to earn more praise in the future.  To show appreciation does not only satisfy a need, it creates a desire for more.
  • Do not wait for a farewell party to recognize an employee’s good performance.  The employees will be much satisfied and they will try harder to perform better if their efforts are appreciated while still on the job.

Always remember to show appreciation to subordinates next time they do some favorable performance.  They will surely feel happy and enthusiastic to do better thus, making the work place a second home for every employee.

Keeping a Scoreboard

Any sports person who does not bother to keep record of his scores will surely find difficulty in improving his game. On the other hand, a sports person who conscientiously keeps record of his scores will be aware whether his is getting better playing the game.

The same is true in business. It is very important to know that a businessman is playing a good game and not just talking about his business.  The best way to determine, whether the business is doing better than good is to examine the results.  Questions like: What was accomplished lately? What are the things that were not done? What are the plans of action that need to be accomplished”, are vital questions that will determine the extent of accomplishments based on desired goals.

How can these be done?

  • Write down what were accomplished the previous week.  It may be surprising that there are only a few tangible achievements to show for the week’s work.  There could have been a lot of talking and listening in conferences, meetings, and others, but what matters most is what was really accomplished.
  • Keep score and review regularly what have been accomplished or missed to do recently.  Set goals for what are intended to be accomplished daily, weekly or for the month ahead.  On the next review, determine who succeeded in attaining goals, who failed and why.
  • Do not mock or let others mock themselves into thinking that discussing about a problem is the same as doing something about it.  No words can make up for insufficiency of results.

By keeping score, any executive will find it useful in determining whether everyone in the team is working to be able to achieve a common goal.
