Oil rises on expected drop in supplies

NEW YORK (AP) — Oil prices rose Tuesday with some investors anticipating that a recent tropical storm disrupted supplies.

The government will report petroleum supply levels on Wednesday. According to a poll by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos., the storm likely cut U.S. supplies by 2.9 million barrels of oil and 400,000 barrels of gasoline.

Oil rises to near $87 as Obama speech awaited

SINGAPORE (AP) — Oil prices rose to near $87 a barrel Wednesday in Asia amid hopes that President Barack Obama’s major policy speech later this week will provide a catalyst for stronger U.S. economic growth.

Benchmark oil for October delivery was up 94 cents to $86.96 at late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude fell 43 cents to settle at $86.02 on Tuesday.

Import prices of iron ore climb last week
