As the saying goes, “Eagle we are not, but we can still fly, our imagination can become our wings. The magnificent eagle is still just an eagle, but we can soar as high and as far as our aspiration can take us.”

Fresh graduates from different prestigious colleges and universities were hired by a local bank as marketing team to promote and sell its products and services. The team underwent rigid trainings before they were allowed to be on their own. Each of them was given specific target market to penetrate and eventually saturate to be able to accomplish their individual goals and targets.

Everyday before going on field work, they attend short meeting with their superior and have a one-on-one dialogue to discuss areas that need improvement in performance. One of the team members almost gave up during the training period but he decided to remain in the team. What gave him the drive to move on? He diligently listened and followed the teachings and guidance from his superior whom he was impressed by the manner of coaching the team. They were challenged to “soar like an eagle”. The influence brought to him by his superior made an impact in his life and career. In addition, he was grateful as to how his superior invested time and efforts in training the team.

To name a few of the superior’s method in coaching are: First, Each of the team were coached based on ability and capability. Second, the superior knows very well what proper performance is and able to judge accurately. Third, the superior establish high standard of performance so that they can take pride when tough but attainable goals were attained. Fourth, when it comes to performance evaluation, it’s done objectively. Above all, the superior served as the source of optimism and confidence of the team.

“The acid test comes when the mentor is no longer in the picture”. After a serious consultation with his superior about his future, he left the team and joined a multinational company as sales supervisor. Every occasion that he and his superior meet by chance in different places, he would gladly share his fortune that is, his upgrading to another position in sales and marketing in the same multinational company. Indeed, he has soared like an eagle in his chosen career.
