Mastering Verbal Communication
When a person communicates verbally, either in conversation or in a presentation, the common goal is to make people understand what is being said. This can be accomplished by having in mind the word KISS (keep it short and simple). It is advisable not to assume that people will understand what is intended to be said. Obviously, the message will not necessarily get through. People carry their own attitudes, opinions, emotions and experiences to an encounter and this often clouds their understanding of the message.
When speaking, approximately only about 10% of the words used get through to others. Spoken words, are unlike written words where a person can go over a reading several times to ensure understanding. It is the responsibility of the speaker to make sure the message get across to the listeners or audience.
As a reminder, always be careful of the words to be used in order for the message to be understood. Oftentimes, when individuals are extremely well versed in a particular field like in medicine, manufacturing, engineering or banking, the tendency is to use industry jargon in conversation or presentations. While this might be comfortable for the expert, it often causes confusion on the part of the listener. It is best therefore to use simple words and to the point where listeners can easily understand the message.
The main objective in verbal communication is to have the message understood by the listeners. To achieve this goal – bear in mind the word KISS.
