How to Treat Employees as People
It is a common practice among companies to hire people either through a head hunter agency (for the executive level), via newspaper ad or through the use of the internet.
It is quite amazing though that, although there are interested parties aiming for a better position or higher pay, there are qualified individuals who rather stay with their present employers.
Perhaps, the main reason is that their employers take interest in them as individuals.
Any employee can be expected to perform better for an executive or employer they respect and like than for someone whom they respect but work with fear or they do not like working with, this is quite true even when the latter executive raises their salaries and wages.
Having sincere interest in people is dealing with them courteously, thoughtfully and with consideration. Here are the basic rules on human relations to serve as guide for business owners or executives in dealing with employees:
- Upon arrival at the workplace, say a pleasant good morning/good afternoon with a smile.
- Remember employees’ first and last names. Calling employees by their proper names makes them feel that they are recognized.
The president and founder of a distinguished commercial bank is admired and highly respected by all the employees, from the janitor up to the executive level, for his being a good natured leader. It is his daily routine to greet and call the employees by their first name as he walks along the corridor on the way to his office. His good example was contributory to favorable working value and business culture of the bank.
- It is best to learn something about people being regularly associated with like their personal interests, hobbies or family background. This information can be of help when there is an opportunity for an informal discussion which is a favorable avenue for building strong good will with employees.
- Give compliment once in a while whether it’s about the employee’s appearance (neatness, nice outfit, etc) or for an accomplished task. A good compliment can inspire a subordinate to perform well.
- Avoid being hostile and fault-finder. Many executives have the tendency to undermine people because of their mistakes or weaknesses instead of giving notice to their strengths and accomplishments.
Any subordinate will be happier and motivated to perform their jobs well when treated properly as human beings.
