How To Deal with Burnouts
Burnout is one that is frequently observed and affects a growing number of workers in different areas of work. When a person cannot cope with the ever increasing demands of the job or to self-imposed standards of performance, exhaustion usually begins to build-up. More often than not this situation is not relieved, the result may be damaging physically and emotionally.
Oftentimes, irritability, boredom, resentfulness, insomnia, stomach problems and headaches accompanied by a low self-esteem and discouragements are the early signs of a person suffering from burnout.
Burnout usually occurs among people who are very idealistic and with set high standards but are unable to achieve them. This ends up to a vicious circle of “increased work and lack of recreation and leisure which results in increasing stress and decreasing time to relieve stress”.
These are tried and tested pointers on how to prevent burnout:
- Have other interests outside of work like sports of preference that are physical in nature i.e. swimming, work out in a gym; listening to music; watching movies and spending time with acquaintances or loved ones during week-ends
- Avoid setting unreasonable goals. Practice SMART principle in goal setting. Goals must be Specific or Simple, Measureable, Attainable, Reasonable and Time bounded.
- Do not hesitate to ask for help or consult people in authority or with influence. It is not a sign of weakness but instead, it is a sign of being objective and smart.
Seeking solution to overcome burnouts keeps an individual maintain perspective and lessens stress.
