Effective Leadership

A person who wants to reach his potential as an effective leader must have an attitude of admission of shortcomings, the courage to face the challenges and commitment to improve and do better.

A leader, however, has certain restraints in life. The question is: What can be done to overcome these? The internal restraints that can affect a person’s leadership are: fear, impatience, denial, impulsiveness, deceit, jealousy and anger. Aside from the internal are the external restraints. This involves how one is being regarded by the members of the family, the extent of influence by one’s mentor, the status and acceptance of the family in the community and one’s business/industry exposure.

Every person has the potential to become an effective leader. What to be done primarily is to recognize all the restraints in life. Then plan as to how these restraints can be addressed personally or by the help of someone who will serve as a mentor who is trustworthy and capable. However there are facts of life wherein certain traits, skills and relational capabilities which cannot be totally changed but can be improved depending on the person’s willingness and determination to change.

An effective leader can overcome these restraints by having positive mental attitude through continuous education and putting into practice what was learned for personal improvement. As a result, one can help others to reach higher levels of performance by encouraging, helping and giving hope to keep going even during desperate moments. And be a good example through words and actions to others.
