Why Sales People have to be Goal-Oriented
One of the ways to become self-motivated is by having a purpose in life. This calls for goal setting. A goal does not only motivate, it provides focus, meaning and direction in personal and professional lives.
There is a saying that goes, “Sometimes, we fail to see the forest because of the trees”. When we are engrossed in the “little things” and ignore the big picture, we miss the whole point. There are examples of this situation is the workplace. For some, daily routine will probably find it boring. But if one look at it as a means to attaining goal for career growth, then the job becomes more valuable and more significant.
The case of habitual tardiness may appear as just one little misdeed. But if the number of minutes/hours of an employee’s tardiness is computed, it may add up to loss of man-hours for the company. It is good to be detail-oriented. But one must learn to step back and look at the overall scenario. Sometimes, the concern in managing the work to the very last detail is given more attention than the most crucial aspects of the career – the purpose for working.
Everyone should have a Personal Mission Statement which is actually one’s goal in life. It should contain the vision, values in life that will serve as guide in daily activities – be it a career, family or personal matters. The vision and values dictates one’s behavior.
The following are some guides that may be applied:
- First, make it a point not only to memorize the vision, mission and code of ethics of the company but to internalize them. Let them serve as a basis for career goal.
- Second, make a reminder of career goal in the workplace. Look at it whenever there is a feeling of being challenged.
- Third, while doing the daily-to-do list, make sure to have an overall goal for the day.
- Fourth, always remember that thoughts, words and actions are reflection of one’s values.
- Fifth, work moments of silence on a regular basis just to reflect about life and how to cope with the future.
