The Worker’s Attitude on Work
Mr. Howard Weiss, an associate professor of psychological science at Purdue University conducted a research on workers attitude about their work and how they interact within the organization.
With the cooperation of Daniel Ilgen and John Onilla, both are also associate professors of psychology, they were able to come out with the following factors that can clear out the cobwebs which are influencing the employees behavior and attitudes about their workplace.
- The attitude of fellow-employees towards their job can greatly influence ones attitude towards work.
- The age and job tenure has significance on employee’s job satisfaction. This is particularly true among senior employees with longer tenure and who are more likely contented with their jobs.
- The most satisfied employee might be the least productive and the most productive might be the least satisfied.
- Most of the subordinates overestimate the ability of their superiors in influencing the increase of their salary.
- Employees today are smarter when it comes to income package. They prefer benefits that are as advantageous as cash which are not subject to any tax.
- Technology does not eliminate jobs, but it might cause lateral transfer of work. When companies install computers or new equipments, for example, they often expand in other areas and therefore the need to hire more employees.
- Chronic absenteeism is not necessarily a sign of job dissatisfaction. The most satisfied employees are the ones frequently absent. It was noted that in some jobs, there are employees working on backlogs on shorter work hours during weekends but earning bigger salary.
- Most of the managers and executives involve subordinates in the decision making process. When a manager involves their subordinates in decision affecting them, they are more likely to be productive and motivated. As a result, the manager will gain recognition and the positivity of advancement.
