Observation: Behavior in the Market Arena

“Business practices merely reflect the moral fiber of its employees”, this is according to Kenneth Andrews, former editor of Harvard Business Review.

This reminds me of a subordinate whom I counseled because of poor working habits due to habitual tardiness and absenteeism. There were occasions that reports are not submitted on time, and sometimes, would need revision. Aside from this, also discovered to have been habitually borrowing money from co-employees despite being well off financially (branded shoes, bags and cosmetics.)

Regretfully, we had also an employer who implements marketing principles that are not found in books – bribing and corrupting people who have the power in decision making in the industry. On both cases (subordinate and employer) we can determine that family background, school and social involvement have a primary influence on other people in the market place.

People are reared from different kinds of environment. Starting from family (culture, values and beliefs), educational background (level of education and status of educational institution attended), and social status in the community. These are key contributing factors as to what characters are instilled on youngsters that would determine the kind of employees or employers they would become later. Before these youngsters go to the market arena, the influence of their family, school and social environments had already made an effect on them.

But the good news is that people can change. Only when they do a self-assessment evaluation, recognize their mistakes and shortcomings and resolve to a total change in perspective to become successful in their personal and business dealings. This will make them valuable and good citizen of their community.
