Wikipedia defines the mission statement as:

A mission statement is a formal short written statement of the purpose of a company or organization. The mission statement should guide the actions of the organization, spell out its overall goal, provide a sense of direction, and guide decision-making. It provides “the framework or context within which the company´s strategies are formulated

A company’s mission statement can be an incredibly important item.  It sums up your entire business and purpose in a simple sentence or two. Many companies have overlooked this one thing, and while it may not make or break them- a mission statement can be a valuable tool.

To form yours ask yourself a simple question: I provide _____.   My business is trustworthy because _____.

Think of your products or services, and try to capture them in a word or two.  While it’s not a hard lined must, you may also want to include something about the core values of your company.

If you already have a mission statement, make sure that it is prominently featured on your website.  Consider moving it if it isn’t, above the fold and near your company’s name or logo would be possibly the best place for it.  Above the fold simply means that it is above the break where a website user would have to scroll down.

However, if your mission statement is longer try and create an summed up version of it for the placement.  Aim for simple and concise, and in one or two lines.

When it is done, you can use it for any promotional materials, business cards, and other placements that are sure to draw attention.
